Understand Compulsions & Addiction

Compulsions are behaviors that you engage in repeatedly and have negative impacts on your life. Though people may initially trick themselves into believing that they have control over the behavior, they may find that attempts to limit the behavior are largely unsuccessful or take a great deal of effort. Many behaviors that are a part of a normal or healthy life can become compulsive. These behaviors include sex, shopping, Internet use or even eating.

 

Addiction is a term that I reserve for compulsive use of substances. While some people can use substances in a moderate way, others struggle with overuse and it leads to destruction in multiple life areas.

 

Compulsions and addictions cause stress, anxiety and depression inside of a relationship. Couples therapy can help you heal the relationship wounds caused by addiction and compulsion as you find alternative ways to channel compulsive behaviors and skills to manage addictions.
